Resiliency- Plasticity of the Mind

In life, there are certain tests that are unavoidable. The way we cope with these tests will determine what makes or breaks a person. When a person breaks, it means that person has given up. The lesson you learn for weathering the storm is what “makes” a person into a solid individual. This is my personal experience with resiliency.

Being resilient plays a major role in relation to mental health. With resilience, there’s an inner strength that helps a person rebound from a setback or challenge. In the military, I was forced with a setback. Amid the turmoil of completing a pre-training course for Ranger School I failed. For eligibility into Ranger School, an individual must stand out from his/her peers and specially selected by leadership cadre. This pre-training course consist of three weeks of intense combat leadership training. To consist of: A 25-meter swim and equipment removal, 5-mile run, 12-mile road march, land navigation, water operations, and night/day patrolling. I completed majority of my tasks, but that wasn’t enough. I failed land navigation, which is map reading. Moving to a marked point on map with a compass and protractor. I went back to my unit with my head down, mad face, and a bald head. I didn’t want to speak with anyone, because of my failure. I felt like I let my unit down. I felt like the wait of the world was on my shoulders.

Even though I returned to my unit feeling defeated, I was aware of the option to try again. I was intent on trying again; first that would entail getting over the loss. Next, I needed to build up enough momentum to motivate myself. Then, brush back up on my land navigation skills. As I started from the basics, I realized that land navigation wasn’t hard. I was just using a poor method and I needed to recalibrate.

Once I felt confident enough, I informed my leadership that I was ready. Instead of sending me back to the pre-ranger course, I was offered a slot in Sapper School. Through my persistence and hard work, I was recognized. Sapper school is an elite leadership course in the United States Army, specific to my Military Occupational Specialty, as a Combat Engineer. Through a series of rigorous tests, a participant is graded on individual performance and teamwork. I trained for more hardships; I know, but there’s a method to the madness. There’s also a book called “Failing Forward” by John C. Maxwell. In Failing Forward, John C. Maxwell states that reading the book will help stop making excuses, start embracing failure as a natural necessary part of the process, and let one find the confidence to proceed anyway.

No matter what a person may go through in life. A person can be assured that even though bad things happen, that “we” as individuals determine our own outcome. It’s something like a paradigm shift of beliefs that transcend the mental barricades placed in one’s own mind.

Fasting- A System Reset

Hi how’s it going guys, I want to talk about the benefits and my experience of completing my first 3 day water fast.

Recently, I just completed my first 3 day water fast. What made me attempt the fast wasn’t anything i researched online, but as i was meditating, a voice popped into my head. The words of this voice was “3 day fast”. If you don’t know what that voice is, it’s the higher self. I advise that for medical purposes to consult your medical physician before attempting. Some would recommend not passing 36 hours.

I started on a Monday, the first day wasn’t that bad. It was slight hunger pangs and light growling. I consume around 6-8 cups of water throughout the day. This is the most important part of it by the way, hence the name. I also completed a light workout of pull ups, push ups, dumbbell curls and dumbbell presses. All the food that was sitting in my stomach were pretty much out by the end of the night.

The 2nd day was really a problem. The hunger pangs were intensified, it felt like i was being punched in the stomach. To be honest, I cant count how many times i got up and walked to the fridge just to look and close the door again. It gets real the second day. It isn’t for the faint of heart. I felt dizzy and really weak, my stomach was so empty. So I mixed a little honey with my water.

The 3rd day was much better, I didn’t really feel hungry. I stopped going to the fridge and just continued to drink water. It is important after the third day to put maybe a little salt in your water, if you plan on continuing afterwards. Salt helps the body retain water, the last thing is to become a victim of “Hyponatremia”.

The next day is celebration lol. Now, there are rules to breaking your fast at the end. The whole purpose was to detoxify your body right. So, do not overload yourself by indulging, you should have built up enough discipline. Start out smooth, with some nice teas, maybe smoothies. Then gradually incorporate some vegetables.

The extra energy boost from this process is amazing not to include other physical/spiritual benefits:

  • Promotes autophagy
  • lowers blood pressure
  • improves insulin and leptin sensitivity
  • lowers the risk of several chronic diseases

There are also some dangers associated with fasting to include:

  • Becoming Dehydrated
  • Losing the wrong type of weight

Abstaining from food and taking a break from digestion allows your body to rest and heal. When you allow for this break, your soul is also cleansed.

Herbs – Natural remedies to satisfy your needs


Have you ever researched herbs and their benefits? Herbs can be used in medicine, aromatherapy, cooking, and of course to keep away pest. My basis is to educate you on how to use herbs for everyday use.

Medicine


Various herbs have certain medicinal properties. Cinnamon for example is known to lower blood sugar levels and has a powerful anti-diabetic effect. Herbs such as Sage can improve brain function and improve memory. Having working knowledge on certain herbs can be a healthy alternative to certain everyday over the counter medicines. You can make these remedies in your own home. I believe it’s very cost effective but can be time consuming due to your use of the product. Another well-known herb is Ginger root, which can treat nausea and has anti-inflammatory properties that can help with pain management.

AromaTherapy


Herbs can also be converted into an essential oil to be used for aromatic purposes. Aromatherapy is what you would call a pseudoscience. By use of scent, aromatherapy claims to improve the psychological and physical health of its user. Aromatherapy has been around for thousands of years. The term “aromatherapy” was coined by a French perfumer and chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé in a book he wrote on the topic that was published in 1937. Aromatherapy can be utilized by sense of smell or absorbed through the skin. It can be used in:

  • Diffusers
  • Aromatic dispensers
  • Inhalers
  • Bathing Salts
  • Lotions, Oils, or Creams
  • Facial Steamers
  • Hot and Cold Compresses
  • Clay Masks

The Benefits of aromatherapy include the following:

  • To manage pain
  • Improve the quality of sleep
  • Reduces stress, anxiety, and agitation
  • soothes sore joints
  • Treats headaches and migraines
  • improve digestion

Just to name a few but you get the picture. It can be restricted in some areas but the benefits are amazing.

Cooking


Personally, I love using herbs in my cooking. It brings out that little extra without using any extra salt. Herbs are an easy way to add life to dull dishes, and I mean honestly, who doesn’t life that little extra pizzazz. Basil, cilantro, parsley, you can find these in pretty much any grocery store. These herbs can be used either dried or fresh. Add a little mint to your mojito, hence the term “Mint Mojito” on the night out. I believe you can’t go wrong with that at all.

Pest Control


Did you know there are certain plants that can keep away bugs and other pest? Yep, just like that by placing these plants inside your garden or your own home. The essential oils in a plant acts as nature’s bug repellent. You can even use plants to make your own bug repellent. Here are a few you can use:

  • Lavender to keep away bundles of flies
  • Lemongrass contains citronella
  • Lemon Thyme repels mosquito’s by bruising the leaves
  • Rosemary repels mosquitoes and a variety of insects harmful to vegetable plants

There are many uses for herbs. Natural way or no way I guess.

There a many benefits that meditation can provide. From a personal standpoint, if life is overwhelming you, find a quiet place. Sit and focus on your breathing and visualize a calm space. Imagine yourself on a calm beach or any place that you’ll feel safe. Focus on the positives in your life. Negatives may arise but allow yourself to feel those emotions and dismiss them. Allowing yourself to expand and realize that your a small piece of the universe, but also that you are significant and important. Everything that happens in life may come at you out of nowhere, but realize that you are not that situation or event. When you can realize who you are and become aware, then many external event can’t control you or your actions. Having clarity of the invisible forces that dictate the world, will have no hold of you. Then you are free to manifest your desires with intent, with this knowledge you become aware of what you allow into your life. Everyone deserves to be happy and live a life of abundance and love.

 

Love not Hate


It’s easy to operate out of hate and become victim to life’s whims. Operating out of hate is not the way but that’s just my opinion. Every human being on this planet is given free will. We’re free to operate on whatever feels good to our nature. When we operate out of love we can begin to heal ourselves and others. It doesn’t matter what religion you belong to, we can all reap the benefits of meditation and mindfulness. When your soul is happy, then your happy. Point blank period.

Conclusion

I’m going to end it here. I can only provide knowledge on what I experience as an individual. The struggles I’ve been through in life have led me here. I’ve been given the opportunity to reach out to others as a living testament. Your mistakes and your past can’t make you, but if you choose to grow the benefits can be reaped. Don’t fold, life is a blessing and the situations are a lesson.
